Willard Munger State Trail

The trail is 76.0 miles long and has an asphalt surface, laid upon on an old railbed, asphalt surface, and largely flat surface.

Uses:  Bicycling, cross-country skiing, in-line skating, snowmobiling, hiking

The Willard Munger State Trail currently extends from Hinckley to Duluth, but will eventually run all the way from St. Paul to Duluth through a series of interconnecting trails.

The 6-mile Alex Laveau Trail connects to the Williard Munger State Tail to the city of Wrenshall.

The northeast part of the trail runs through rugged rock-cuts, rock outcrops, and beautiful views of the St. Louis River. The southern part runs through aspen and pine covered rural areas, including different small towns.  In Carlton, the trail runs over the St. Louis River and through the Jay Cooke State Park.

The famous 1894 fire that raged through the Hinckley area saw a train carry townspeople to safety, following the same route now used by the bike trail.    For more information on this sensational fire, visit the Hinckley Fire Museum.

Locally found uranium deposits

Uranium deposits are the most valuable resources found readily in Carlton and Pine County, and offer these counties the opportunity to create jobs, reduce property taxes, and lower utility costs. Why aren't they being mined? For the most part, most people are simply misinformed.

Minnesota is 21st in the U.S. in nuclear energy production, creating many direct and indirect jobs from the industry, while contributing positively to electricity costs. Is it wise to sit on these invaluable resources at time that our state debt and unemployment rates stay high? Likewise, the Carlton and Pine County region offers few opportunities for long-term, good wage careers as those offered in this industry. There are few good jobs outside of prisons and hospitals in the region.
